What does “tilt-shift” mean?
Tilt-shift is the effect of changing the focus of the picture in unusual ways.
With these effects a simple photo of a real life scene can be presented in a way that makes it look like a miniature photo. But how does it work?

If you don’t have a tilt-shift lens, you can create such a photo with Photoshop. Even if it may never look quite as good as it does with a real lens, you can still create amazing images.
The trick is really rather simple, you need to manipulate the photo’s depth of field. Your eyes will immediately think that this cannot be real.
Just play around with the depth filter in Photoshop. The effect is better when the picture was taken from above (which reinforces the impression of the miniature).
